About Fitchburg Women’s Hockey League (FWHL)
The Fitchburg Women’s Hockey League was founded in September 2002 by a group
of women who simply wanted an opportunity to play hockey. Today, with the help
of many, their dream has grown into a 5 team league, consisting of over 60 women ages 16 to 60, of all abilities, from all over Massachusetts and New Hampshire—a far cry from the first night when a bunch of players just threw their sticks in the middle of the ice to make two teams!
The FWHL provides a recreational, yet competitive, opportunity for women to play
the game of hockey, improve on skills, and just have fun with a wonderful group
of women! The league encourages and supports women of all abilities and backgrounds.
The pure love of hockey is what unites these women.
The FWHL’s mission is to provide recreational and competitive hockey for women
of all skill levels with one common bond: the love of hockey and the desire to
have fun.
Are You or Someone You Know Interested in Playing in Our League?
The format of this league is for players to join as individuals. A committee will then
evaluate the strength of the individual players and they are then placed on one of
four teams. The objective is to make each team as equal in caliber, thus reaching our
goal of blending all abilities into one fun, balanced league.
The season runs from September to April. All games have two referees and a
scorekeeper. The teams are comprised of approximately 11 skaters and one goalie.
A sub list is also maintained for those that can’t make a full time commitment.
Presently there are five teams, sponsored by local businesses.
The league plays at the Landry Rink located at Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg on
Saturday nights, during the hours of 6:40PM and 7:50PM and occasionally at the Gardner rink (times vary).
If you ever wanted the chance to play ice hockey, this is the league for you! Many
women in our league had never played ice hockey before. We welcome all calibers
and all ages. Come out and have a ladies night out on the ice!
